Steve Scalise currently serves as Majority Leader and represents Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District. Since he was elected to the House of Representatives in 2008, Steve has tirelessly served the people of Southeast Louisiana and advanced a conservative agenda that benefits all Americans.
Steve’s greatest joy is being a husband to his wife, Jennifer, and a father to their children, Madison and Harrison. A native of Jefferson Parish, Steve is a lifelong LSU Tigers and New Orleans Saints fan.
Steve registered as a Republican the day he turned 18. He ran for and won his first election in 1996, serving in the Louisiana State Legislature until 2008 when he took the fight to Washington.
In the 118th Congress, Steve was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as Majority Leader – the second highest position in House Republican Leadership. In this role, Steve is charged with implementing the House legislative agenda: setting the Congressional floor schedule, guiding Committee Chairs on policy priorities, and working with his colleagues to advance conservative solutions that address our country’s toughest challenges.
Prior to being elected Majority Leader, Steve served as the House Republican Whip from 2014-2022 where he was the House’s chief vote counter and responsible for unifying the Republican Conference to support conservative legislative efforts. As Whip, Steve shepherded the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the USMCA trade deal to passage – both of which were major boons for the American economy.
Steve also formerly chaired the Republican Study Committee, which is the largest caucus in Congress solely focused on promoting conservative, principled legislative agendas.
A proven conservative, Steve believes in upholding the Constitution. He has always exercised fiscal discipline, pushed for lower taxes, and believed in balancing our nation’s checkbook. He is committed to fighting for secure borders and working to undo the Biden administration’s pro-amnesty policies that put the safety of our nation’s communities in jeopardy.
Steve also knows the importance of American energy dominance and development – both to our country and to the state of Louisiana. On day one of the 118th Congress, Steve committed to lowering energy costs with the Lower Energy Costs Act; streamlining energy production and the permitting process, and reducing American dependence on China. Steve will continue to fight for a national energy strategy that enhances energy production, increases innovation, and reduces our dependence on foreign nations.
Steve believes in protecting and promoting parents’ role in their child’s education, standing up for pro-life values, and protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
In 2012, Steve led the charge to pass the RESTORE Act, working across the aisle to secure wins critical to Louisiana. This piece of legislation dedicated fines from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to coastal restoration and has been credited as the most important step toward restoring Louisiana’s coast. Over a decade later, Louisiana currently has the most active coastal restoration and resiliency projects underway in the history of our state.
Steve graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School and attended Louisiana State University, where he earned a degree in Computer Science. After graduating, Steve worked as a software engineer before running for Congress.
A fourth-generation Louisianan, Steve’s great-grandparents immigrated from Sicily to New Orleans as farmers, eventually opening a grocery store about eight blocks from where the Superdome is located today.
In 2017, Steve was critically wounded at a baseball practice for the Congressional Baseball Game, a charity baseball game played by Members of Congress that raises millions for charities benefiting children and families. He survived thanks to the swift and heroic response of the U.S. Capitol Police, the Alexandria Police Department, and his fellow colleagues. After fighting for his life, he returned to Congress with resilience and hope – inspiring the nation with his continued determination to make America the greatest country. Steve and his family remain thankful and overwhelmed by the prayers and support they received from the American people.
